Tips for Pool Owners
Energy Saving Tips for Gas Heated Pools
- Whenever possible keep pool or spa covered when not in use. This will cut heating cost and keep dirt and debris from settling in the pool and consuming excess chemicals
- Keep the pool thermostat at 78° F. or lower. According to the American Red Cross this is the most healthy pool water temperature.
- Use an accurate thermometer
- Be sure to tighten the thermostat knob stopper after the proper temperature has been established.
- Set the time clock to start the pump system after the sun comes up, the swimming pool will lose less heat.
- For pools that are only used on weekends leave the thermostat at less than 78°, lower the temperature to a range that can be easily reached in one day. If you have the right sized pool heater for your pool, you can set it at as low as 60° F.
- While on vacation or during times when the pool is not in use for extended periods, turn the heater off all together.
- Set up a regular maintenance scedule for the pool heater.
Gas Fired Pool Heater Recommended Maintenance
(Must be performed by qualified installer, service agency or the gas supplier)
- Visually examine the entire venting system. There should be no obstructions in the flow of ventilation and combustion air.
- Visually examine the pilot flame, hot surface igniter and main burner. The normal color of the gas flame is blue, if flame appears yellow, burners should be cleaned and inspected.
- Visually examine the heat exchanger for loose debris or soot. Clean if dirty.
- Remove burner tray and clean burners and main burner orifices.
- Keep the heater area clean and free from combustibles and flammable liquids.
- Check wire ends and wire connections. They should be clean and tight without corrosion.
- Check the gas pressure, supply and manifold.
- Check for gas leaks.
- Check operating & safety controls.
- Water pressure switch senses whether or not water is available to the heater by measuring back pressure inside of the heat exchanger. If the pool water pump fails or the water filter is blocked, the pressure switch prevents operation of the burner.
